The bunch rolled out from Dundee after the morning prologue. The flag dropped and before long five riders (Martin Coopland - Falkirk, Neil Aitken - Pedal Power, Stewart McGregor - Dooleys Alasdair Easton - ERC and Keith Smith - Glasgow Wheelers) had taken the race by the scruff of the neck and pulled out a 10s lead.

The lead stretched to 50 secs for a couple of laps and a bridging move by John Sturman brought him up to the lead group. This had the usual damage on the pack, groups of riders being shed lap by lap.

On the final lap the bunch, powered by Granite City and Herbalife, had reduced the lead to 20 secs but this stretched again as they left the circuit for the uphill run to the finish.

The results indicate a powerful break from Robin Wilkins (Stirling) as the tired legs hit Tullybaccart. Chasing down the tiring break that was now in pieces on the road, he closed within three seconds ofthe leader, John Sturman. The rest of the break finished in dribs and drabs, just managing to hold off the chasing bunch.

After collecting a stage win bonus of 20s, John Sturman takes the Yellow Jersey as Race Leader at the end of the first stage with an aggregate time of 1hour 59mins 58s.
